What are we doing here?

This is a blog about academic writing. Every month, I plan to write a few posts about the craft of writing (and editing) for publication. I will focus primarily on organization studies, which is my disciplinary field, but I also intend to discuss writing practices in other fields and in other genres. The blog will provide a space for me to think about what we write, how we write, and why we write in academia.

I will keep my posts relatively short, no more than a few hundred words. Here, I take my inspiration from Guided by Voices, the indie rock band formed by Robert Pollard in 1983. To date, Guided by Voices has released upwards of 1,200 songs. In the band’s heyday, during the 1990s, few of these songs overstayed their welcome; most clocked in at under two minutes. Yet the songs were dense in imagery and rich in melody. And they were so damn catchy.

That’s the effect I’m aiming for. Let’s see if I can make it to 1,200 blog posts in the next forty years.

Don’t stop now.
